4 Easy Steps to Design Your Dining Room

Today we are excited to share 4 easy steps that you need to know when designing your dining room. There are so many different ways to design a dining room and it is important to think about the styles you like and the mood you want to create. Let’s dive into the basics you need when decorating your new dining room!

A Rug to Set the Tone:

The first thing to consider when redesigning or decorating your dining room is what type of rug you want/need. The type of rug you choose can set the tone for the rest of your dining space.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • What size rug do I need?

Start by measuring your dining room. Next, you will want to subtract the overall measurements by a couple of feet. (ex. If your space is roughly 10’x12’ you’ll want a 8’x10’ rug)

  • Do you have dark or light flooring?

This can be important because your rug can make your dining room feel lighter or darker depending on what is needed. (ex. If your dining room has dark flooring you can add a light colored rug to make your space feel larger and brighter)

  • Do you have children or pets?

If you have an increased chance of spills or dirty paws then you will probably want to consider a performance grade or easily washable rug. This will prevent you from having to purchase a new rug every time an accident happens.

Table + Chairs:

When choosing your dining table and chairs there are some important things you need to consider:

  • How many people do you want to seat?

Take a moment to think about the amount of people that will normally be eating in the dining room. Also consider family gatherings and how large they usually are. Remember that there are tables where you can add a leaf to the middle to accommodate more people on special occasions.

  • What shape best suits your dining room?

If you have a square dining room we usually recommend a round dining table, and if you have a rectangular dining room we recommend a rectangular dining table.

  • What color and material does your space need?

Similarly to choosing a rug, you will need to consider how durable your furniture needs to be. Some wood dining tables and chairs can be easily stained while other materials are far more durable.

Buffets + Sideboards:

After choosing your rug, table, and chairs we urge you to consider your dining room storage needs.

  • Do you need a little or a lot of storage space?

Do you have family heirloom dish sets that you want to display? Consider a buffet or sideboard with glass doors to display your items. Do you tend to be a bit more messy with the items you store? Opt for concealed doors to hide the clutter.

  • What size fits your space?

It is important to remember to leave plenty of room to walk around your dining room table. Oftentimes it is easy to forget to leave enough space. We recommend leaving 3-4’ of space between your dining table and your buffet or sideboard for easy access to your table and your storage.

  • What color and material do you need?

As discussed before, you will need to examine your room to determine if you want to make your dining room feel lighter and larger or darker and smaller. (Tip: typically the table and buffet material are the same but they don’t have to be!)
